Jessica Chastain and Vanessa Redgrave have been cast in The Secret Scripture.
The actresses will play the older and younger versions of the same character in the adaptation of Sebastian Barry's novel, according to IFTN.
The film, which is set to shoot in Wicklow and Sligo in June 2014, centres on the character of Roseanne McNulty, who sits down to write her autobiography aged 100, while she is a patient at a mental hospital.
The woman's account differs wildly from the facts surrounding her troubled life.
The Secret Scripture will be produced by Noel Pearson (My Left Foot, The Field), with a director yet to be announced.
The book was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2008.
Chastain, who won Best Actress - Motion Picture Drama award at the 2013 Golden Globes for Zero Dark Thirty, will next be seen in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and Hers, Miss Julie and Interstellar.
Redgrave most recently starred in The Butler and can next be seen in Foxcatcher and the TV drama The Black Box.
