Lars Mikkelsen has been cast as a villain in the third series of Sherlock.
The Danish actor will play "Sherlock's new nemesis" Charles Augustus Magnussen in the BBC show.
Although further details of his character have not been revealed, Magnussen is likely based on the character of Charles Augustus Milverton, a murderous blackmailer, who appeared in a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1904.
Mikkelsen's casting was confirming by Sherlock's executive producer Sue Vertue on Twitter.
The actor is probably best known for playing politician Troels Hartmann in the original Danish version of The Killing, and for his role in the drama Borgen.
He also starred in the 2012 Irish film What Richard Did.
Sherlock is expected to return to BBC One in late 2013.
