Actress Melissa McCarthy has spoken about the reviewer who was critical of her weight in a film review for her hit Identity Thief’.

Rex Reed’s review for the New York Observer was widely criticised after he described the popular actress as “tractor-sized”.

McCarthy has said that she worries how his mean-spirited brand of criticism might affect younger girls.

Speaking to The New York Times, McCarthy said “I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate. I just thought that’s someone who’s in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids, who are mooning me and singing me songs.”

She added "(Articles like Reed's) just add to all those younger girls, that are not in a place in their life where they can say, ‘That doesn’t reflect on me.’"

She said in her younger years she may well have been affected by the comments.
