The FBD Irish Open got underway at a sundrenched Fitzwilliam Lawn and Tennis Club in Dublin today.

Home favourites Sam Barry and John Morrissey both enjoyed victories on the opening day of competition in Dublin 4.

Barry, who has enjoyed a superb season, saw off Britain’s Matthew Short 7-5 6-1.

John Morrissey also claimed a straight-sets victory, recording a 6-3 6-3 win against Britain’s’ Adam Thornton-Brown.

Ireland’s Stephen Martin suffered elimination after Britain’s Neil Pauffley prevailed 6-0 6-4.

Ben McLachlan of New Zealand defeated Britain’s Keelan Oakley’s in a three-set thriller 4-6 6-2 7-6.

Britain’s Michael Look and New Zealand’s Marcus Daniell also recorded first-round wins on day one.
