Taking a central role in a thriving 800m scene in Ireland, Síofra Cléirigh Buttner is in the form of her life going into the Tokyo Games.

Involved in an arms race with fellow Olympians Nadia Power and Louise Shanahan, as the Irish 800m indoor record was broken time and again in quick succession at the start of the year, Cléirigh Buttner broke Power's record in February when she ran 2:00:58 in the US.

As a student at Villanova University, Pennsylvania Cléirigh Buttner had a string of titles and records to her name, and was a seven-time All-American, 10-time Big East champion and eight-time Penn Relays champion during her collegiate career.

A silver medal during the national championships, where Shanahan took gold, was enough to secure Cléirigh Buttner's Olympic place.
