Nicholas Roche is one of a number of Irish competitors to follow in their father's Olympic footsteps. Tour de France winner Stephen took part at the 1980 Moscow Olympics while still in the amateur ranks. Roche Jr will be contesting his fourth Olympics, once again on Team Ireland alongside cousin Dan Martin.
Roche has completed 24 Grand Tours, most recently at the 2021 Giro d'Italia, where he finished third on stage 18. Roche's palmares include two stage victories at the Vuelta a Espana and 64 top-10 Grand Tour stage finishes, putting him third on the all-time list.
The 37-year-old has taken on the onerous double of the 244km road race on the lower slopes of Mount Fuji and the 44.2km time trial over two laps.
