Name: Shane Lowry
Undoubtedly one of the most popular sportspeople on the island, Lowry, like McIlroy, pitches up at this Olympics after missing Rio due to Zika virus concerns.
While he hasn't won since his famous Open Championship victory two years ago, Lowry's recent form suggests he could legitimately be pegged as one of Ireland's leading medal hopefuls, outside rowing and boxing.
He finished tied fourth - memorably alongside Padraig Harrington - at a thrilling PGA Championship in Kiawah Island and also finished strongly at the recent Irish Open, albeit without troubling the top of the leaderboard, and his strong defence of his Open title at Royal St Georges suggests his game is in good nick.
Lowry memorably broke into the wider public consciousness when he won the Irish Open as an amateur in Baltray in 2009. Ten years later, his victory in the Open Championship in Royal Portrush was one of the most widely hailed triumphs in Irish sport.
