Name: Rory McIlroy

Event: Golf

Age: 32

Surely now the most famous of all Irish Olympians, McIlroy is now set to represent the country in golf in Tokyo after withdrawing from Rio over concerns about the Zika virus.

The former world no. 1 has had a mixed year in 2021, and recent form has been patchy but he did win at the Wells Fargo Championship in Quail Hollow - a favoured course of his - in May.

A two-time PGA Player of the Year in 2012 and 2014, McIlroy has won 28 tournaments across the PGA and European Tour and has scooped four major championships, however the most recent of those was in 2014.

His best year in recent times was 2019, when he won the prestigious Players Championship and the FedEx Cup, returning to the top of the world rankings in November that year. He currently lies 11th in the world.
