England defender Ben White has joined Arsenal from Brighton & Hove Albion on a long-term contract, both Premier League clubs announced on Friday.

Arsenal did not disclose the transfer fee but British media reported that the deal was worth £50 million for the 23-year-old.

White has been capped twice by the England senior team. He played in 36 Premier League games for Brighton last season.

He previously had loan spells at Leeds, Newport County and Peterborough United.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said White had been a "top target" for the club this summer.

"Ben is an intelligent defender who is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and his style fits perfectly with us," Arteta said.

"And of course, he is still young, so his age and profile fits with what we are building here. We are all looking forward to Ben being central to our future long-term plans."
