Shamrock Rovers' Aaron McEneff says the comprehensive 4-0 victory over Dundalk shows why his side are sitting top of the SSE Airtricity League.

The midfielder netted a penalty as the Hoops took another stride towards potential league glory by dismantling the reigning champions and he told RTÉ Sport's Tony O'Donoghue that Rovers excelled in all facets.

"[Dundalk] obviously have a big game Thursday but regardless of what team they put out, Dundalk's always going to have a strong 11 on the pitch," he said.

"So we obviously came up here with a game plan and we had one job to do and that was to go out and win the match.

"I thought from the first minute, we were excellent. We created a lot of chances in the first half. We were three up and I thought maybe we could have been up by more.

"But I think to a man tonight, we showed why we are at the top."

McEneff added that a "ruthless mentality in the changing room" had driven the team to the level that they are currently operating at.

"It goes from the training ground straight to a match day and we're really pleased with the three points tonight," he said.

McEneff also praised team-mate and fellow midfielder Jack Byrne after a two-goal display including the fourth goal from a tight angle.

"Jack's a great player but we've got a squad of great players," he said.

"Jack's got that bit of something special. He sees a pass that other people don't see and tonight his work-rate off the ball was very good as well. He works well for the team and you see him running in behind and his finish for the last goal was excellent I thought."
