Two-time FAI Cup-winning manager Alan Mathews is to join the St Patrick's Athletic coaching set-up for the 2020 season.

Mathews is a St Pat's board member and the club disclosed today that he would joining the back-room team, working closely alongside head coach Stephen O'Donnell and his assistant Patrick Cregg.

Mathews has managed a host of clubs in the League of Ireland over the past two decades, guiding Longford Town to successive FAI Cup victories in 2003 and 2004.

He subsequently had spells managing Cork City, Drogheda United, Shelbourne, Bray Wanderers, Athlone Town before returning to Longford in the spring of 2016 for his most recent job.

Mathews' enormous experience contrast somewhat with head coach Stephen O'Donnell, the hugely decorated former midfielder, who was appointed in August, just seven months after his retirement from the game.

The Inchicore club endured a relatively frustrating season in 2019, winding up in fifth spot and missing out on European football.
