A Derry City fan who took a flare into a cup final has been banned from football matches in the North for five years.

The ban imposed on 36-year-old William Diver is believed to be the first of its kind since new powers were given to judges.

Diver was also given a five-month jail sentence.

He was searched and arrested at the Oval football ground in east Belfast before the Setanta Cup final between Crusaders and Derry City in May.

The device was not set off and Divers' lawyer said he had brought the flare with him to create an atmosphere at the match.

There was never any intention to cause injuries, he said.

Diver has instructed his lawyers to appeal the sentence.
