Kildare County’s seven-year stint in the eircom League came to an end at Station Road as a goal from Dave O’Brien and two from David Goldbey gave Mervue Utd a 5-2 aggregate win and promotion to the eircom League First Division.
After a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Kildare were expected to secure safety on their home ground but Johnny Glynn’s team upset the odds to record a famous victory.
After Craig Mooney had fouled Ollie Keogh, O’Brien gave the visitors the lead in the 15th minute when his free kick from the left wing fooled Austin O’Neill and went in off the inside of the post.
Kildare were not without their chances though, Craig Mooney missed from eight yards after Colin Fortune had teed him up in the first half and in the 58th minute, Ciaran Kilduff blazed over after bursting through the static Mervue defence.
That miss was to prove especially costly when Mervue doubled their lead five minutes later.
Ollie Keogh’s simple pass caught Kildare totally square and Goldbey raced through and beat O’Neill with a well-placed finish.
Kildare’s night was summed up in the 73rd minute when Kilduff was booked for diving for what appeared to be a foul inside.
Mervue wrapped up the win when Goldbey scored his second of the game and third of the night with a neat chip nine minutes from time.
