Bohemians were crowned the eircom Premier League champions in dramatic fashion this afternoon, after a last minute goal sealed a 1-0 victory over rivals Shelbourne in Tolka Park.
With the game looking likely to end in a 0-0 draw, Shelbourne were still mathematically in with a chance of snatching the title from The Gypsies. However, in the last minute of normal time Mark Rutherford, who had earlier squandered two chances to put Bohs in front, found space in the penalty area before lobbing a delicate cross back in that was meet headed home by Bobby Ryan to the delight of the large travelling support.
Shels had no time to stage a comeback and when the referee blew the final whistle, Bohemians' players and supporters alike celebrated the return of the Premier League trophy to Dalymount Park.
Jubilant Bohs boss Stephen Kenny said "It was just a great win, we deserved it and were the best team this season. Shels pushed us all the way but we deserved it. All season we played the best football, probably the best played in this league for many years."
Meanwhile, Bohemians' goalscorer and man of the match Ryan said "It's a great feeling to get the winner here, especially as Shels were our main rivals. We've been on top all season and it just proves that the best team won the league, I think."
