German football legend Franz Beckenbauer believes the Old Firm can lift the European Cup again. Celtic are the only Scottish side to have won Europe's most prestigious competition back in 1967, but the former Germany coach insists Celtic and Rangers will have to leave the Scottish Premier League to attain those heights.
Beckenbauer said: "The Lord Provost said he hopes a Glasgow club can win the Europe Cup - why not? Celtic are very strong but it is getting more and more difficult. It's a tough competition. Leverkusen have shown you don't need to be a massive European club to do well. But they have been playing at the top level of the Bundesliga and they've had experience of playing in the Champions League. They've got Brazilians and Argentinians to mix with the German players and they have a very good balance."
He continued: "The problem for the two big clubs in Scotland don't have the same level of competition at home and it can be difficult to move to another level in Europe."
