Euro 2000: England lose against Portugal

Paul Scholes put England ahead in the third minute, from a pin-point Beckham cross. After 18 minutes McManaman doubled the lead - with another damaging cross from Beckham leading to the goal. He hit the ball first time into the net. Portugal again tried to pull themselves back into the game and in the 22nd minute Figo avanced towards the edge of the England penalty area and let fly with a rising 20-yard effort, which flew past a stranded Seaman into the roof of the net. In the 37th minute Pinto brought them back on level terms, from a Costa cross. Emile Heskey came on for Owen at half time, but England had barely had time to re-organise before Gomes stole in to coolly clip the ball over Seaman into the roof of the net to go ahead. Despite continued English pressure, the game finished 3-2.
