Soccer: Denis Irwin to sign new contract

Manchester United hope Denis Irwin will sign a new contract next week – but admit Teddy Sheringham is likely to wait until the summer before deciding his future. Negotiations with Irwin are all but complete and United expect the defender to put pen to paper on a one-year deal next week. This agreement will take the 34-year-old, who is already United's longest-serving player after he joined from Oldham in June 1990, into his 11th year with the club.

United chairman Martin Edwards said, ’Hopefully we will have something to say about Denis' contract next week.’ Edwards, though, knows that Sheringham's contract situation will take longer to resolve. United have made an improved offer to the striker, but Edwards realises that the 34-year-old will probably wait until the summer and make a decision then after weighing up all his options.

Sheringham's agent, Barry Nevill, claims the England striker, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, is wanted by a number of clubs abroad, while West Ham and Charlton are also reportedly interested. Edwards said, ‘I think Teddy will wait and make his decision after the last ball of the season has been kicked.’
