Mark Allen romped to a 4-0 win against Mark Davis in the opening round of the PTC Grand Finals in Galway.

That victory has set up a mouth-watering clash against Joe Swail, his friend and compatriot from Northern Ireland.

Breaks of 67, 40, 39 and a critical 43 clearance helped the Haikou World Open Champion ease to a 4-0 win in the Dafabet PTC Grand Final.

"It was important for me to knuckle down and come here and give it my best," Allen said.

"After winning in China it's important to try and keep the momentum going. Hopefully I can go deep into this tournament, and you never know, I might have a chance of winning again."

Joe Swail recovered from a 3-0 deficit against Stephen Maguire, to post an unlikely 4-3 win over the recently crowned Welsh Open champion.

Fit-again Ali Carter upset four-time world champion John Higgins with a 4-2 victory in the first round.

Carter, who could not take part in last month's Haikou World Open due to complications with his Crohn's disease, sealed a place in the last 16 with the win.

He took advantage of a missed red to make a 79 clearance in the first frame before Higgins made it 1-1 with a run of 111.

Carter then made it 3-1 and 4-2 to progress.

"I've been really struggling with my Crohn's disease and haven't been able to practise much so it's a big win for me," said Carter.

"I just dug in today and it was a good performance. The first frame was massive, it's hard to clear up from 60 behind, especially against John Higgins."
