Doherty through in Players Championship

Ken Doherty eased into the third round of the Daily Record Players Championship with a 5-3 victory over England's Ali Carter in Glasgow yesterday. The former world champion and 2003 runner-up is one of the players running into form before the world championship starts in Sheffield on April 17th.

The Dubliner said afterwards: 'I think all the top players are feeling the adrenaline pumping with the championship just 12 days away. The world championship is special but you still want to do well in this tournament.'

Meanwhile a refreshed Stephen Hendry beat Gerard Greene today to reach the last 16 of the Championship in Glasgow. The seven-time world champion bounced back from his shock early exit in the Irish Masters to beat Greene 5-1.

Hendry said: "For eight days after Ireland I didn't pick up my cue. I had a few rounds of golf and just relaxed. It's no guarantee though I'm going to play well here every match."

Hendry will meet Alan McManus on Thursday night after the Scot beat Dominic Dale 5-1. Veterans Jimmy White and John Parrott also advanced with wins over Shaun Murphy and Stephen Lee, respectively.
