Rim Jong Sim triumphed from a nailbiting women's 69kg to take North Korea's weightlifting gold medal count to three at the 2012 Olympic Games and continue the nation's remarkable surprise performance.

The weight category was wide open after Russia's gold medal favourite Oksana Slivenko, world champion, was forced to withdraw last week due to injury.

And the competition proved just as unpredictable as expected, with Rim's gold being confirmed on the penultimate lift while merely bodyweight alone separated second, third and fourth place.

Roxana Daniela Cocos (Romania) claimed silver, with Maryna Shkermankova (Belarus) taking bronze ahead of unfortunate compatriot Dzina Sazanavets after all three tied on 256kg.

In the men’s, China's Lu Xiaojun won gold and broke two world records in the 77kg division.

Lu Xiaojun beat his own world record total, set at the world championships three years ago, by 1kg, with an overall weight of 379kg across the two styles of Olympic lift, including a world record snatch lift of 175kg

Team mate Lu Haojie took the silver medal with a total of 360kg, despite suffering an injury after his first clean and jerk lift that meant he was unable to go head-to-head with Lu Xiaojun for the gold.

Cuba's Ivan Cambar Rodriguez took the bronze.
