Michelle Finn and Eilish Flanagan have failed to progress to the final of the women's 3,000 metres steeplechase this morning.

In sweltering conditions in Tokyo, Finn finished ninth place in her heat in a time of 9:36.26.

The second heat was a faster race which meant Finn's time was not good enough to advance.

Flanagan secured a personal best 9:34.86 in the third heat to finish 12th.

Doing well to stay on her feet after a number of athletes fell in front of her, Flanagan battled to stay in contention throughout and shaved six seconds off her personal best.

"It's one of the slower times I've run all year," Finn told RTÉ Sport afterwards. "It's good for a bad run, but it felt more like a bad run, definitely."

Flanagan was more satisfied with her morning's work, despite not progressing.

"To PB here in these conditions on this stage, to a lot of people that wouldn't be enough, but I'm decently happy with that," she said.

"It really excites me for that to be my first performance on the world stage. It makes me believe a bit more that I belong there, so I'm looking forward to the next opportunity on a stage like that."
