RTÉ Sport broadcaster Jimmy Magee has been honoured by the International Olympic Committee for services to the Games.
The legendary commentator was presented with a specially commissioned replica of the Olympic torch in honour of his years covering the Games.
Magee, who has covered ten Olympic Games, spoke to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland about his memories from the different Olympiads.
“Two of them that stand out in many ways for various reasons are Sydney and Barcelona,” said Magee.
“Beautiful to work in, lovely cities, great people and some magical performances.
“Barcelona was lovely really, and we won the gold medal there, [Michael] Carruth did, and [Wayne] McCullough won silver.”
Magee continued: “I think Carl Lewis is the greatest track and field athlete ever. And the best boxer - Teófilo Stevenson."
Magee also believes that Ireland will come away from London with a medal, saying: “I think it will come from boxing. Any of the six boxers is capable of getting a medal.
“Of course they’re equally capable of getting none. It has to be remembered the standard is very high.
“I expect we will be going home with three at least.”
