Irish Olympic bantamweight John Joe Nevin has stated that his form and fitness is returning after a double fracture of his cheekbone as he bids to win a medal at London 2012.

At the National Stadium on Tuesday, Nevin said: “I had three fights out in France where I boxed at 60kg. In two of them I didn’t perform because I was only starting to get back into it.

“The third fight I was fighting at 64kg and I was flying it.

“Those three bouts got me tipping over and it’s probably for the best that I didn’t have too many bouts you know.”

Nevin also realises that he will be targeted as a favourite to medal in London.

He said: “They’re going to be watching my side. But I’ll just stick to my own game and tactics. One fight at a time, one round at a time, one minute at a time.

“I’m just trying to keep away from all the hype and focus on my boxing. You can go back through all the papers afterwards. Now it’s just about keeping your head right and getting the job done, because it is a job that we’re going out to do.

“It’s like a business. We’re going over to do a job. When we’ve done the job then we can enjoy it afterwards.”

The Ireland boxing squad moves to Assisi, Italy, now to prepare for London and Nevin is adamant that there is still much preparation to be done before the Games.

“London still isn’t the next step, it’s Assisi. Hopefully, all going well and injury free, we’ll go into London then,” he said.

“Until we get the draw, we’ll worry about the opposition when we get the draw.”
