Dan Martin was born on 20 August 1986 in Birmingham and currently rides for Garmin-Sharp.
He is the son of former British Olympic cyclist Neil Martin, a nephew of 1987 triple crown winner Stephen Roche, and a cousin of fellow pro cyclist Nicolas Roche.
In his first year as a professional, Martin won the 2008 Route du Sud stage race and became the Irish National Road Race champion. He reached a UCI World Ranking of 35th (with 137 points) at the end of 2009 season.
In 2010 he won UCI ProTour stage race Tour of Poland. This performance meant he finished 49th in the year end UCI World Rankings with 106 points, which also helped Ireland to 17th place in the nation rankings (254 points).
In 2011, he won stage nine of La Vuelta a Espana and held the King of the Mountains jersey on stages ten and 11. He finished 13th overall in La Vuelta.
The Olympic road race takes place on 28 July. Start time is 9.55am.
