Tori Pena was born in Los Alamitos, California, on 30 July 1987.

Her father's family are of Mexican extraction and maternal grandmother Angela McCoy (née Coyle) was born in Derry. Her grandmother makes her eligible for dual nationality and to compete for Ireland.

She acquired her dual citizenship in June 2010 and and declared for Ireland, joining Finn Valley Athletic Club in Donegal.

In July 2010, Pena won the Irish National Championships at Morton Stadium with an Irish record of 4.15 metres, which she equalled at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.

On 5 March 2011 she set the Irish indoor pole vault record at 4.35m.

On 4 March 2012, she achieved the Olympic Qualifying standard of 4.50m.

Pena then set a new Irish pole vault record of 4.52m at the San Diego Triton Invitational in the USA on April 27 2012.
