Northern Ireland's Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty topped the time sheets in first qualifying ahead of this weekend's round of the Superbike World Championship in Portimao.

Pata Honda Rea, who currently sits seventh in the rider's championship, set a time of one minute 43.551, with compatriot Laverty just over 0.05 seconds adrift on his Aprilia.

Kawasaki's Tom Sykes was third and Laverty's team-mate Sylvain Guintoli fourth.

Following Sykes' double race win last time out at Donington Park there are just four points separating the Brit and championship leader Guintoli, with Laverty third 20 points back.

Marco Melandri is fourth in the standings and was sixth-fastest in Portugal, with Davide Giugliano ahead of him in fifth.

The top 10 was rounded out by Chaz Davies, Carlos Checa, Leon Camier and Loris Baz.
