Two men have died after a Rally Dakar truck crashed into their car in Chile.

The truck, which was not involved in the race, was carrying tyres on route D-43 which joins La Serena and Ovalle, 400 kilometres from the capital Santiago.

Chilean Roberto De la Cruz Vera Hernandez and Peruvian Freddy Arocupiapa Torres died instantly, while Hugo and Juan Arucutipa were taken to Ovalle Hospital for treatment.

‘It was a sad accident, which occurred outside of the lines of the security operation,’ Chile's security chief Jaime Vasconcellos said.

Argentinian Marcelo Fabian Sanchez, who was driving the truck, was detained to answer questions about the accident.
