Cork footballers claimed their first silverware of the season with a 1-11 to 0-10 victory over Kerry at Mallow.

John Hayes fired a crucial second-half goal that set Brian Cuthbert's side on their way.

Kerry led by 0-05 to 0-04 at the break.

However, Cork upped their game in the second period, with Daniel Goulding firing over crucial scores from placed to secure the spoils for the Rebels.

Kerry started brightly in front of a big crowd at Mallow and hit three points inside the first minute.

But they were wasteful and should have had more than the two Bryan Sheehan frees and a Donnacha Walsh point.

Daniel Goulding (2), Paul Kerrigan and Aidan Walsh knocked over points for the Rebels.

Barry John Keane's second point made sure the Kingdom were in front at half-time.

The home side made the better start in the closing period with Mark Collins, Kerrigan and Michael Shields on the scoresheet.

Hayes was introduced as a substitute and in the 50th minute he finished well for the only goal of the game.

Paul Galvin came on as a substitute as he slotted in at centre-back.

Tipperary referee Derek O'Mahony showed three black cards in three minutes in the final quarter, two for Cork and one for Kerry.

Despite Jonathan Lyne and Sheehan converting points for Kerry, Donncha O’Connor sealed the victory with a late free as they claimed the McGrath Cup.
