Kildare 0-17 Offaly 2-08

An astounding second-half comeback by Kildare against Offaly at Croke Park this afternoon assured them a place in the Leinster Senior Football Championship final against Dublin in two weeks time. Kildare who were trailing by 2-4 to 0-4 after 27 minutes appeared to be in trouble. But in what was a blistering display they hit 12 points without reply from Offaly. Offaly finished strongly and might well have forced extra time, but Kildare held on for a great win.

Colm Quinn got the first goal on seven minutes, after he broke free from his man and shot low into the net. The same build-up worked again in the twenty first minute, when Ciaran McManus scored another goal for Offaly. Vinnie Claffey's second point of the day put Offaly two points up after 27 minutes. But then Kildare began an awesome comeback. Points from John Doyle, Padraig Brennan and Martin Lynch left just three points in it at half time. Nine unanswered points followed between the start of the first half and the twentieth minute. Offaly had no reply as Kildare got on top in the middle of the park. In that scoring spell, Padraig Brennan excelled, notching up a total of eight points in the match. Offaly eight points down with six minutes to go began their comeback, but it proved too little too late, as Kildare held on to win.
