Carlow received a rough ride against unfancied Waterford before coming through to win 3-11 to 1-10. Mark Carpenter scored a shock goal for Waterford after 17 minutes, but the big talking points of the first half were team mate Gary Hurney's two glaring misses. Hurney brilliantly skipped past Carlow's defence but twice blazed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Johnny Nevin netted for Carlow seven minutes into the second half but Waterford managed to stay in touch until fifteen minutes from the end when Ciaran Kelly scored Carlow's third goal to open up an eight point gap. Waterford rallied towards the end, and nearly scored a goal before Gary Hurney made amends for his earlier misses to grab a three-pointer at the death.
