Leinster SFC: Carlow 0-9 Wicklow 0-8
Defender Joe Byrne emerged as the hero in a tight first round replay when his late point won this first round replay for Carlow, who will meet Kildare in the next round.
Both sides finished with 14 men due to the second half dismissals of Carlow forward Brian Kelly and Wicklow captain Ronan Coffey in separate incidents. The quality of the football at time was mediocre but both teams worked fiercely hard in a game which often saw the defences on top. Carlow got off to a flying start scoring five unanswered points in the opening 20 minutes through Johnny Nevin, Willie Quinlan, Pat Nolan, John Hickey and Sean Kavanagh; but Wicklow started to click at midfield and came back into the game, scoring four points in their own unanswered run, three of those coming from free-taker Tommy Gill. Carlow's Brian Kelly broke the run by adding the last point of the half to send Carlow in at the break leading 0-6 to 0-4.
The second half was tight and tense, but two points for Wicklow from Gill and another from Jonathan Behan in reply to a point from Willie Quinlan left the sides level for the first time at 0-7 apiece by the 65th minute. The pressure was telling at this stage with both sides kicking wides, before Quinlan and Gill exchanged scores and the game appeared to be heading for extra-time, when Joe Byrne kicked over what proved to be the winning point.
In the minor game Kildare defeated Wicklow on a scoreline of 2-13 to 0-8.
