Laois won the right to face neighbours Offaly in three weeks time at Croke Park after defeating Wexford by 0-18 to 0-14 in a free flowing entertaining game. But it was only 10 minutes into the second half that they made their move, when a string of 6 unanswered points saw them take a lead they were never going to give up.
The game had been very tight up to that point, with Wexford actually leading by three points before the Laois revival. It was 0-7 apiece at the break, with wingback Leigh O'Brien, despite playing at wing-back, grabbing four points for Wexford. Ger Halligan's men started the second half strongly, going into a 0-11 to 0-8 lead. Beano McDonald, Chris Conway and Ian Fitzgerald came to the fore as Laois went 0-14 to 0-11 ahead, a lead they stretched to 0-18 0-12 with Fitzgerald, McDonald and David Sweeney adding the points, with just three minutes left. Two points from John Hegarty reduced the deficit but it wasn't enough for Wexford, who lost out by four points in a free flowing game that saw 21 points from play.
