Irish eventing riders have enjoyed a fine weekend at Barroca D'Alva in Portugal, with Tipperary’s Padraig McCarthy recording the most impressive result in the feature four-star competition.

McCarthy and the 10-year-old gelding Leonidas II moved up from second place after Cross Country to score a superb win in the CCI 4*-L.

Galway's Cathal Daniels also took third place for Ireland with The Irish Sport Horse OLS King Aragon.Cathal Daniels was also in impressive form in the CCI4*-S. He partnered the Sarah Hughes-owned Shannondale Percy (ISH) to fourth place.

In the CCI2*-L at Barroca, Michael Ryan took second place with TR Kaygraff, while Austin O´Connor finished fourth with Isazsa.

In Germany Eoin McMahon has scored one of the biggest wins of his career, after he came out on top in the  1m55 Volkswagen three-star Grand Prix at Braunschweig.

Riding Chacon 2, McMahon came out on top after a 13-horse jump-off to take the winner's prize of a new car valued at over €43,000.

A brilliant jump-off round saw him finish almost three seconds clear of German runner-up Tim Rieskamp-Goedeking with Querido.

Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic, another Clare rider was in excellent form in Saturday's $401,000 Douglas Elliman Real Estate five-star Grand Prix at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida.

David Blake partnered Keoki to a fifth place finish. They jumped clear in the first round but narrowly missed out on a place in the jump-off when exceeding the time allowed by just .03 of a second. Victory went to Ashlee Bond (ISR) with Donatello.
