England's Garry Thompson survived a spirited fightback from Scotland's Alan Norris to book his place in the quarter-finals of the BDO World Championship on Wednesday night.

Thompson, the 10th seed, won the first two sets without dropping a leg and added the first leg of the third set as well.

But Norris finally found his range and produced a superb 146 finish to win the third set.

Norris won the fourth set as well to level the match, but Thompson regrouped and eventually ran out a deserved 4-2 winner.

Fellow Englishman Stephen Bunting was also a 4-2 winner over compatriot and sixth seed Scott Waites, while third seed Dean Winstanley was a comfortable 4-1 winner over Robbie Green, finishing in style with a 116 checkout.

However, Winstanley admitted he would need to brush up on his mathematics after miscalculating what score he needed on more than one occasion.

‘I've got to sort my finishing out, sort out my calculations,’ Winstanley told BBC Sport.

‘I think it was just a memory block, a simple mistake. I think I did it three times.’
