Nicolas Roche took his second top ten placing in two days in the Volta a Catalunya on Tuesday, sprinting home in a fine eighth place at the end of stage two.

The 182.6 kilometre leg to Banyoles was won by the British rider Mark Cavendish (HTC Columbia), who was taking his first victory of the season.

Roche also finished in the same time, and thus retained his ninth place overall.

Monday’s prologue winner Paul Voss (Team Milram) continues to lead overall, with Roche just six seconds back.

Fellow Irishman Philip Deignan also finished in the main bunch on Tuesday. Deignan is 142nd in the general classification, 31 seconds behind Voss.

The ProTour event continues tomorrow with a 185.9 kilometre stage from La Vall d'En Bas to La Seu d'Urgell.
