Ireland’s Tommy McCarthy recorded a unanimous preliminary round win against Bulgaria’s Nikolay Mutavski at the World Amateur Championships in Kazakhstan today.

McCarthy, the only member of the Ireland team in action on the tournament's opening day, will face Canada’s Samir El-Mais in the last-32 of the heavyweight division on Friday.

“Tommy performed very well today and we’re delighted to have made a winning start to the tournament,” said Ireland team manager Paul McMahon.

Lightweight Sean McComb and light welterweight Ray Moylette will be in action at the 100-nation tournament tomorrow.
