Katie Taylor took the Boxer of the Year award at the Irish Amateur Boxing Association's Annual Awards Night at the Green Isle Hotel in Dublin last night.

Belfast light-flyweight Paddy Barnes, who won bronze at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, received the Outstanding Achievement award, while Joe Ward took home the Best Elite Boxer gong.

Ward, the current European light-heavyweight champion, claimed his second Elite title earlier this year and was also presented with the Boxer of the Tournament Award at Dublin's National Stadium.

Coaches Billy Walsh, Zuar Antia, Pete Taylor, Des Donnelly and Michael Gallagher were also honoured.

The Schoolboy Achievements awards went to Oliver McCarty, James McGivern and Michael Nevin. The Irish trio claimed three gold medals at the 2012 European Schoolboy Championships to help secure ten medals - a record haul for Ireland at this level - in Anapa, Russia earlier in the year.

The Ryston BC from Newbridge, Kildare won the Best Club and Coaches award, while IABA historian Joe Kirwan collected the Lifetime Achievement accolade.

Eight-time Elite champion Neil Gough and Mick Darby were inducted into the IABA Hall of Fame.

Reflecting on another outstanding year for Ireland's most successful Olympic sport, IABA President Tommy Murphy hailed the performances of Ireland's boxers in international and domestic competition.

Murphy said: "The Olympic Games in London earlier this year were a fantastic occasion.

"The tremendous atmosphere, the performances of our squad against the best in the world. It was a truly momentous occasion and our Olympic team were a credit to the nation.

"Our teams are now winning medals at all levels internationally and are a consistent source of pride to the association. This week alone our boxers have won three medals at the European Women's Youth and Junior Championships in Poland.

"Our coaches and staff and the clubs and coaches throughout the country play a crucial and integral part in the ongoing success of Irish amateur boxing internationally and domestically and they deserve enormous credit for what has been another magnificent year."
