John Joe Nevin has won his first fight in the World Series of Boxing, but his team Paris United were defeated 3-2 by Milano Thunder.

Bantamweight Nevin took a unanimous decision against Milano’s Vincenzo Picardi and cruised to victory in the opening match of the night.

Nevin said after the fight: ‘He's an Olympic bronze medallist and I knew I was the underdog.

‘But I've got a great team looking after me at Paris United and I've been learning some things.

‘It's great to get a victory over five rounds.’

It was downhill for Paris after that victory, however, with Milano’s world lightweight champion Domenico Valentino beating Paris’ Radouane Fahrany 3-0 on points. Milano went 2-1 ahead overall when Sergiy Derevyanchenko from the Ukraine took victory with a technical knock-out in the first round.

France’s Ludovic Groguhe was next in the ring for Paris United, he came up against Nikolajs Grisunins of Latvia, Groguhe came out on top after dropping behind early on.

At 2-2 overall, the final fight was to decide the victory on the night. The heavyweight battle was between Clemente Russo - the 2007 world champion and 2008 Olympic silver medalist - and Zied Jouini. Russo’s performance was superb and gave him a comfortable win.

The final win gives Milan three points and Paris one point.

Nevin is rumoured to have been paid a bonus of €7,900 for his win in Milan.

Kenny Egan is likely to make his WSB bow on Tuesday night when his Miami team take on Los Angeles Matadors.
