European Athletics is pleased to announce that London Marathon winner Liliya Shobukhova of Russia and Estonian discus star Gerd Kanter have been voted as the European Athletes of the Month for April.

Shobukhova, the European 5000m record holder, confirmed her status as one of the best Marathon runners in the world by winning the 2010 London Marathon in 2:22:00.

The time was the best in the world this year and took more than two minutes off her previous best of 2:24:24 when she made her debut over the classic distance in London 12 months ago.

The victory, that made her the first Russian woman to win in the British capital, was her second in her three marathon outings after winning in Chicago last October.

Reigning Olympic discus champion Kanter started his 2010 outdoor season with a string of top notch performances on the US outdoor circuit.

With a stunning throw of 71.45m at Chula Vista in California, Kanter announced in no uncertain terms that he is the top draw in the battle for gold at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona in July.

The 31-year-old, who won a silver medal at the last edition of the European Athletics Championships in Göteborg in 2006, is committed to go for European glory to make up for the bitter disappointment at failing to finish on the podium at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin last year.

In a closely contested poll, Shobukhova edged hammer world record holder Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland to top the women's list, while Ireland's sprinter Joanne Cuddihy finished third.

The men's poll was equally tight as emerging Russian 400m star Anton Kokorin rallied close to Kanter but had to settle for second place. Hammer world season leader Libor Charfreitag of Slovakia finished third.
