The Poetry Programme, Sunday 14th March
In the Poetry Programme on Sunday 14th March on RTÉ Radio 1, John McAuliffe introduces the New Poetries VIII anthology, and a poem from Jessamine O'Connor to mark Mother’s Day.
John McAuliffe has published a number of collections of poetry, of which the most recent is The Kabul Olympics. He is Professor of Poetry at the University of Manchester’s Centre for New Writing and Associate Publisher at Carcanet.
He joins presenter Olivia O’Leary to talk about New Poetries VIII, a new anthology published by Carcanet, which he has co-edited with Carcanet’s director, Michael Schmidt. It is the latest in Carcanet’s introductory anthology series presenting work by poets writing in English from around the world, and is a Poetry Book Society Spring 2021 Special Commendation.
In the course of the programme we hear readings by four of the poets featured in the anthology: Jenny King, who was born in London during the Blitz, Christine Roseeta Walker, who was born in Jamaica and lives in the UK, Conor Cleary, who is from Kerry, and Belfast poet Padraig Regan.
Also on the programme, a poem by Jessamine O'Connor to mark Mother’s Day from her collection Silver Spoon (Salmon Poetry).
