The Poetry Programme, Sunday 7th February
In the Poetry Programme on Sunday 7th February, at 7:30 pm on RTÉ Radio 1, Moya Cannon publishes a lifetime of work, and we hear poems about the Mother and Baby Homes from Annemarie Ní Churreáin and Kimberly Campanello.
Moya Cannon's first published collection, Oar, won the 1991 Brendan Behan Memorial Award. She has also won the O'Shaughnessy Award and was Heimbold Professor of Irish Studies at Villanova University in 2011. She has been editor of Poetry Ireland Review and is a member of Aosdána.
She joins presenter Olivia O’Leary to talk about her Collected Poems, published in February 2021 by Carcanet Press, which includes work from her previous collections and some new poems. Themes of ecology, history and music often feature in her work, as does the imagery of her native Donegal.
The final section of the programme revisits the work of two previous guests who have explored the stories and experiences of Mother and Baby Homes in their work. In March 2018, Annemarie Ní Churreáin spoke with Olivia about how Mother and Baby Homes have a personal, family connection, and we listen back to her reading of the title poem of her collection Bloodroot (Doire Press). We also hear again a number of 'found poems', performed by Kimberly Campanello. The poems are from MOTHERBABYHOME (zimZalla), a collection of 796 conceptual and visual poems, one for each of 796 children who died in St Mary’s Mother and Baby Home in Tuam.
