The Poetry Programme Sunday 31st January
In the Poetry Programme on Sunday 31st January, at 7:30 pm on RTÉ Radio 1, Bebe Ashley is inspired by Harry Styles, Gerard Hanberry imagines a scene in a pub, and Seán Dennehy brings us a poem of celebration.
Bebe Ashley was born in England and is currently a PhD candidate at the Seamus Heaney Centre for Poetry at Queen's University Belfast. She tells Olivia about poetry in sign language and reads from her debut collection, Gold Light Shining (Banshee Press), which includes poems inspired by Harry Styles.
Gerard Hanberry lives in Galway. A musician and poet, he teaches creative writing at NUI Galway. He joins Olivia to read from his collection What Our Shoes Say About Us (Salmon Poetry) and new poems imagining a scene in a pub and seeing the world from a child’s point of view.
Also on the programme, we hear news of a Poemathon for Older People, a project being run jointly by Poetry Ireland, the Global Brain Health Institute of Trinity College Dublin and Neuroscience Ireland.
To finish, Seán Dennehy, a poet and singer from County Clare and a former winner of the All Ireland Poetry Slam, performs his celebratory poem To Us from his album of recorded spoken word and song What it feels like. (Available on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.)
The Poetry Programme is available to listen back to after broadcast on the RTÉ radio player.
