The Poetry Programme, Sunday 10th November
In the Poetry Programme on 10th November 2019, at 7:30 pm on RTÉ Radio 1, presenter Olivia O’Leary speaks with poets Michael J Whelan and Martin Dyar.
Michael Whelan joined the Irish Defence Forces in 1990, serving on tours of duty as a United Nations Peacekeeper in South Lebanon and with the Peace- Enforcement mission to Kosovo. He is also an historian and Keeper of the Irish Air Corps Military Aviation Museum and Collection and the lead collector of oral history for the Irish Defence Forces.
Michael Whelan and Olivia O'Leary
In 2016, he published his first collection, Peacekeeper, with Doire Press, which drew on his experiences in Lebanon and Kosovo. He joins Olivia to read from his second collection, Rules of Engagement, also published by Doire Press.
Martin Dyar grew up in Swinford, in County Mayo, Ireland. His debut collection, Maiden Names (Arlen House) was shortlisted for the Pigott Poetry Prize and the Shine/Strong Poetry Award. In an interview recorded at Glebe House and Gallery – part of the Heart of Summer series, in collaboration with Poetry Ireland and the Office of Public Works – he reads two poems from that collection, including his poem Death and the Post Office, which has been added to the prescribed poetry syllabus on the Leaving Certificate. He also reads the title poem, Burke’s Goddess, from his forthcoming second collection with Arlen House.
The Poetry Programme is available to listen back to after broadcast on the RTÉ radio player. A Rockfinch production for RTÉ. Series Producer: Claire Cunningham.
