The Poetry Programme, Sunday 23rd September
Imtiaz Dharker enthralled audiences with her readings at this year’s John Hewitt International Summer School in Armagh. She was born in Pakistan, raised in Glasgow, and now lives between London and Mumbai. She describes herself as a Scottish Muslim Calvinist and has written about the tensions between secular and religious cultures in a world of fear and emergent fundamentalisms. She is also an accomplished visual artist and has illustrated her own collections and her website, and visual art also makes its way into her poetry. Among her many awards is the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry.
Imtiaz joins Olivia to talk about her life and poetry, and she reads some early poems and some from her latest collection, Luck is the Hook, published by Bloodaxe in 2018.
