The Poetry Programme

New translations of work by the German poet Rilke by Irish poet Seamus Hogan, landscape architect Sean O'Mahony and German teacher Ailin Becker. A Rockfinch production for RTÉ.

The Poetry Programme, Saturday 22nd October

In the Poetry Programme on 22 October, new English translations of poems by Rilke, Vona Groarke has two new books out, and a reading from the ‘All Through the Night’ anthology.

When poet Seamus Hogan was doing German language classes in Balllydehob with teacher Ailin Becker a few years ago, he suggested that the class should translate Rilke’s poem ‘Der Panther’ into English. Following the success of that, Seamus, his classmate, retired landscape architect Sean O’Mahony, and Ailin worked together for three years and ultimately published ’30 Selected Poems of Rainer Maria Rilke’. Seamus and Sean join Rick on the Poetry Programme, along with Professor Joachim Fischer of the University of Limerick who gives a flavour of the original German.

Vona Groarke has two publications out with Gallery Press at the moment, her ‘Selected Poems’, chosen from six collections published over twenty years, and a personal essay called ‘Four Sides Full’. She reads from both on the programme.

Moya Cannon reads her poem ‘Night’ from the new anthology ‘All Through the Night’ edited by Marie Heaney and published by Poetry Ireland.
