The Best-Loved Irish Poem of the Last 100 Years

What is your most-loved Irish poem of the last century? RTÉ A Poem for Ireland is a major new RTÉ campaign which aims to get the public talking about the poems they feel are the most-loved Irish poems of the past 100 years.

In this era of centenaries, RTÉ looks back at the Irish poems and poets of the past 100 years and asks the public to help us identify the Irish poems of the past century that we love the most. Whether it’s a poem you studied at school and loved; one that stood out for you at a wedding or funeral, a poem you came across at an important moment in your life, or one your father or mother used to recite; whether it’s a love poem, a political poem, a poem about nature, life, loss, emigration, and whether it’s in Irish or in English, it doesn’t matter. As long as it’s an Irish poem, published in the last century, and you love it, then tell us, and tell us why you love it.

The campaign will be spearheaded by The Works, RTÉ One’s flagship arts show, and RTÉ Radio 1’s The John Murray Show in partnership with Poetry Ireland and An Post.

The John Murray Show with Miriam

A lively mix of entertainment, human interest and lifestyle features with Miriam O'Callaghan featuring The Gathering & David Caffrey, Castlepalooza Festival & Glimmermen 'This Town', Lily Koppel & The Astronaut Wives Club, Camping beside the M50 and music from Ian O'Doherty.

    The Gathering - David Caffrey

Miriam's guest is David Caffrey - the director of RTE’s hugely popular drama series, ‘Love/Hate’.

His uncle and his dad got interested in their family ancestry in the last year or so and coincidentally they got an email from a lady in the Virgin Islands explaining who she was and that they were related. They began swapping emails and his dad and brother were invited over to the Virgin Islands for a get together but unfortunately they were unable to go. She emailed him afterwards and gave him a link for Facebook to look at some of the pictures from the night. So he got on his computer to look them up and they got a surprise to see the entire family, every single person at the reunion, were black!

So they decided to arrange a ‘gathering’ of the Caffrey / Wells family. 18 or 19 cousins from the Virgin Islands arrived over yesterday and they met last night for the first time.

    Castlepalooza Festival - Glimmermen

The August Bank Holiday is next weekend and so is the Casltepalooza Music and Arts Festival.

    Lily Koppel

On April 9, 1959, the U.S. introduced its first astronauts: the Mercury Seven. We know their story, but the story of their wives is often overlooked.

Until now because we have a new book – The Astronaut Wives Club – which tells the real story of women who waited for their husbands to come back from space... It was written by Lily Koppel, a writer living in New York.

    Camping beside the M50

Mark Graham, Ireland’s festival aficionado, has been sending us reports on some of the quirkier ways that people are spending their leisure time this summer.

This week he reports from a campsite in one of the least likely locations… it’s on the edge of Dublin’s M50!

    Music from Ian O'Doherty

Music from Ian O'Doherty who plays in Whelans in Dublin and McCarthy's Bar in Dingle regularly.  He has released his own EP Never in Colour. He is supporting Gemma Hayes in Westport on October 5th.
