    Egg Donation

Some years ago Maria Duffy and her husband sat watching a programme on RTE about fertility. It was a fly-on-the-wall documentary following couples who were having difficulties conceiving.

Having four healthy children of her own, she was hugely moved by what she saw. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to want children so much and to be deprived of the chance. She had been through two miscarriages herself and knew how awful that was, but some of these women had tried for years, been through IVF and had still never even experienced a pregnancy.

It played on her mind for days after watching and one thing that kept coming back to her was the shortage of egg donors in Ireland. To use a donor egg seemed like the best route for a lot of couples, but the waiting list was about five years.

She went to a fertility clinic and started into a process that would be one of the best things she ever did. She had the tests and determined she was suitable to become an egg donor.

She was a successful donor and a couple now have a child thanks to the donation of her eggs. She feels incredibly happy and proud that she was able to achieve her aim of helping a couple in this way.

    Frank and Rachel Bruno

Few figures in the world of sports loomed larger that Frank Bruno in the 80s and 90s.

He became world heavyweight champion in 1995 – and was an iconic and much-loved performer in and out of the ring.

But his greatest contest came after retirement from boxing. His battle against bipolar disorder - commonly known as manic depression - led to him being sectioned twice last year and taken into psychiatric care, against his wishes.

Frank’s daughter Rachel examines how this devastating illness affected their family in a documentary to be broadcast on BBC3 tonight at 9pm. It’s called ‘Rachel Bruno: My Dad And Me’
