The PURE project
For over 10 years now a growing group of dedicated locals in Co. Wicklow have been working hard to restore the Garden County to its former glory. The PURE project (Protecting Uplands and Rural Environments) as it is known, has in the last 10 years collected the equivalent of 400,000 bags of rubbish that was illegally dumped, and to put that amount in perspective, if placed in a line, those bags of rubbish would stretch from Dublin to Dingle!
Another recent initiative of this group is the PURE MILE. This involves locals and groups living in rural areas adopting a mile of road. They keep this section litter free, research information about their local wild flowers, animals, history, and the folklore of the area. This project has been the perfect opportunity for these communities and groups to contribute positively to their locality.
