This year's Dawn Chorus programme took place on Sunday, May 6th 2018, and was a roaring success! All India Radio producer Monika Gulati sent us a pic of herself sporting our Dawn Chorus beanie!!
Well whilst our Dawn Chorus programme may have finished for another year, throughout May, events are still taking place around the country to celebrate the beautiful birdsong that our feathered friends provide. For more information on these events, and on the annual Burren In Bloom festival that takes place from May 18th - 20th, visit our events listings page! And if you have an event you'd like to let our listeners know about, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Shay talks to Irish journalist Ewan McKenna in Belo Horizonte in Brazil, to get the inside track on life in the home of the forthcoming World Cup. June Rodgers will be in studio with news of her first ever tour. And Brenda meets Rahim Nazarali, who is registered blind and about to begin the walk of his life along the Grand Canal...
We delighted that June Rodgers joins Shay in studio today for a chat! For more information about June, visit www.junerodgers.net.
Brazil, Brazil - yes, we are on the countdown to the World Cup!
If you click to play the above video, you'll hear Aloysio Oliveira sing the classic Aquarela Do Brasil [which means "Watercolour Of Brazil"], from the 1942 Disney movie Saludos Amigos! 'Saludos Amigos' means 'Greetings, Friends', and in the Aquarela Do Brasil segment of the movie, José Carioca [a Carioca is someone from Rio de Janiero] takes Donald Duck around Brazil, showing him the sights, sounds and sensations that the Latin country is famous for.
It is a little mood setter as we edge ever closer to Thursday, when very many people from all around the world will tune in to follow events in the fifth largest country in the world. Did you know that Brazil is the fifth largest country by both geographical area, and by population - Brazil being home to a vast 201 million people.
And it is a country with a proud World Cup History - they are the only nation to have played in every tournament and they have won it five times – more than any other nation.
Neymar lifts the Confederations Cup for Brazil in 2013 - will 2014 be similarly as profitable for the Seleção?
But as we know from news reports from throughout the year, as passionate as Brazilians are about football, there has been a lot of protest that hosting the World Cup has become a priority over serious economic and social problems there.
To tell us more, we are joined on the line from the city of Belo Horizonte in Brazil by Irish sports writer Ewan MacKenna...
From this Thursday, June 12th, until Sunday, June 15th, Rahim Nazarali, who is registered blind, will walk 132km of the Grand Canal from Shannon Harbour, in Co. Offaly, to the Grand Canal Dock, in Dublin. He's doing it to raise much needed funds for the Irish Wheelchair Association, where he works as a Tutor.
Rahim is a very impressive young man and this walk would be a hefty challenge to an able bodied person, never mind to someone with 5% to 15% vision.
Brenda and Rahim
Brenda caught up with Rahim and his two guides as they practiced for the walk around Portobello in Dublin.

Rahim wants people to join him and walk some of the way with him. More details are available here:
Rahimathon 14 - Rahim’s Grand Canal Walk Challenge
Between Thursday 12 June and Sunday 15 June 2014, Rahim Nazarali, who is registered blind, will walk the 132km Grand Canal from Shannon Harbour to Grand Canal Dock, Dublin to raise much needed funds for Irish Wheelchair Association, where he works as a Tutor. He will do this in the company of and with the assistance of his two friends and guides Paul Kiely and Brian O’Carroll.
The money raised will be used in part to purchase equipment for IWA’s Rehabilitative Training Unit and teaching kitchen in Clontarf. Each piece of equipment and accessible utensil, ranging in price from €20 to €160, is essential to students looking to learn important new life skills.
Rahim raised €1,800 for the RTU in 2013 when he walked The Grand’s northern sibling The Royal Canal. This year anyone who supports Rahimathon will see their money invested in a way that will be of immediate benefit to the students who attend IWA’s RTU and the many more who will attend the RTU in the years ahead.
If all goes to plan Rahim, Paul and Brian will cover the following ground on each of the days
Sunday Start Sallins 9AM finish Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 6pm
On Sunday Rahim is inviting people to join him for the last 10km of the walk from the Ninth Lock in Clondalkin - where he hopes to arrive between 2.30 -3pm - to Grand Canal Dock, where he plans to arrive about 6pm.
If you've been watching our Herring Gull nest on the roof of Stage 7 here in RTÉ, you’ll know that the camera was knocked a little out of position on Sunday. We think it was the wind, but it may well have been a very curious bird!
The two Herring Gull chicks at the back, exploring the roof of Stage Seven in RTÉ
We've repositioned the camera now and rather than focusing the camera solely on the nest, we're now looking at a broader view of the whole roof, because the chicks are spending most of their time exploring the roof...
Eric Dempsey joins us on the line today with the latest news on our Herring Gulls... To view the NestWatch, click here.

Mooney Tunes is back! Tickets for Mooney Tunes 10 went on sale recently, and just a limited number remain...
Can you believe it? It's time for Mooney Tunes again, and astonishingly, we are approaching our tenth concert! It all started in September 2009, at the National Concert Hall. The very first Mooney Tunes featured music such as Send In The Clowns, The Anvil Chorus and even the theme from Hawaii Five-O. Over the last nine concerts, there hasn't been any genre of music we haven't covered. We've done a lot of classical favourites, we've had arias and choruses from some of the greatest operas ever written.
Tickets to Mooney Tunes 10 range from €10 to €39.50, and can be booked in person at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin (no booking fee), or by calling Ticketmaster on 0818 719 377 (booking fee applies). For more information about Mooney Tunes 10, visit the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre website or the Ticketmaster website.
Mooney Tunes 10 will be a 'Best Of' the music and songs from previous Mooney Tunes concerts.
