Miriam Meets... Professor Risteard Mulcahy and his son Richard

Miriam Meets... Professor Risteard Mulcahy and his son Richard

Miriam O'Callaghan is joined in conversation by Professor Risteard Mulcahy and his son Richard.

They recall Risteard's father Richard Mulcahy who was one of the founders of the Irish state. Both men reflect on his gentle nature at home and the legacy of the decisions he made during Ireland's revolutionary period.

Risteard has a deep respect for his father and Richard explains that while that was the relationship between his father and grandfather, he loves his father and their relationship is more affectionate.

Richard explains that he felt they had a distant relationship when he was a child but became very close after his parents' marriage ended. He feels lucky that his father has survived into his 90s and their good relationship endures.

Richard didn't follow is father into medicine but is an entrepreneur. He studied at NIHE Limerick for a short time and so it was with interest that he returned to that city as part of RTE's Secret Millionaire programme last year. He was shocked by the level of poverty he witnessed and continues to be involved with the community there and the charity Cliona's Foundation.

Risteard explains that he doesn't smoke, drinks and eats everything in moderation and has taken aerobic exercise for the past fifty years - these are the basis for his good health in his tenth decade.

The music they chose was The Coolin; Leonard Cohen's Suzanne and the aria I Know My Redeemer Liveth from Handel's Messiah
